Man Mortgages Home to Purchase NFT of His Own Face, Sells It to Himself at a Loss
Vice Point resident Craig "Craigchain" Hobbes, 41, refinanced his property last October to purchase a $220,000 non-fungible token of his own face — minted by a pseudonymous artist known only as "CryptoMirror7" who Hobbes later confirmed was himself, after forgetting he'd used an alternate email address. Upon realising he had essentially paid $220,000 to himself, Hobbes attempted to sell the NFT back to CryptoMirror7 at a profit, accidentally entered a $180,000 counter-offer from his own other account, accepted it, and is now $40,000 worse off than when he started.
The NFT, which depicts Hobbes in a medium-resolution JPEG taken on his phone camera in a Burger Shot bathroom, currently has one verified owner (Hobbes), one verified listing (by Hobbes), and zero bids from anyone other than Hobbes. His mortgage lender, Leonida First Financial, confirmed the loan remains active. Hobbes told this publication he is "bullish long-term."
