Man Escapes Prison Via Tunnel, Returns Two Weeks Later to Dig Swimming Pool
Notorious Vice City escape artist Franco "Tunnels" Deluca, who broke out of Leonida Correctional Facility in April through an eleven-year tunnel project hidden beneath his cell, was apprehended Monday after returning to the prison grounds with a rented excavator. When asked by guards why he'd come back, Deluca reportedly explained he'd always wanted a pool and that the soil composition on the northeast quadrant was "ideal — real soft, good drainage."
Deluca had been at large for sixteen days, during which time he paid his taxes, attended his nephew's graduation, and left a positive Yelp review for a Vice City sandwich shop. Leonida DOC Director Patrick Swell confirmed Deluca was back in custody, adding he'd been given a single-level cell "out of an abundance of caution" and that the Department was reviewing its shovel inventory policy.
